Photography as a Form of Resistance Against the Nazis

This is a collection of photographs of the Lodz Ghetto, taken by Jewish photographer Mendel Grossman. Though Grossman was employed by the Department of Statistics to take only authorized official photographs, he secretly documented the suffering of his fellow Jews, photographing the terrible conditions in which they lived and the German soldiers’ cruel treatment of them. Like his contemporary colleague Henryk Ross, Grossman risked his life to clandestinely photograph what was forbidden–an act of resistance against the Nazi regime.
